cycling in Washington State or Vancouver Island in March. Is it possible???
Enviado por corinne em sex, 2010-01-08 20:57
Hi!
We come back from a trip around USA and Mexico and are now stopped in Vancouver. We would like to take the road in March, maybe to go in Washington State or Vancouver for a month. After, in April, we will take the road to go back home in Quebec. We are wondering if it's possible to ride our bike in Washington in March, do the coast or the centre is better, is there a lot of snow, how are the winds....? Or maybe we will go visit Vancouver Island, but there is probably a lot of rain and wind there at this moment... Do someone have some advice for us?
Thanks a lot!
Corinne

Welcome! You are on the Wet Coast !...
... at the wrong time of the year. :o)
It sure is wet now around here. And mild, too mild (Can't even get decent snow for skiing on the Coast Range). Winds are not really the problem. It's mostly the rain.
If you really want to cycle around here, the best area would be the Gulf Islands (Galiano, Pender, Gabriola, etc...). They are a bit in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island.
If you are (very) lucky with the weather, there are nice farm-land itineraries in the Lower Fraser Valley north of Abotsford, south of Langley and south-east of Fort Langley.
Contact me if you need more info.

Wet but warm
This is shaping up to be a mild winter so the riding on the Gulf/San Juan islands should be fine in March. Victoria to Sooke as well. Just wear rain gear and you should be fine. It is not Mexico, but you are from Quebec so it should feel toasty.
Thanks, we will think about
Thanks, we will think about it! We already have more rain close than needed!
Vancouver Island
Yes - a lot of rain and wind! You can expect much the same throughout March, but could get better weather towards the end of March. A nice route home would be to cycle up to Port Hardy, take the BC ferry to Prince Rupert and cycle the Yellowhead Highway to Jasper and Edmonton. The Yellowhead is a more scenic route through the Prairies than the Trans Canada Hwy. Dave.
