Short loop in Western Europe - Tips, advices, warnings appreciated...
Enviado por louboumian em seg, 2010-08-23 16:45
Hello,
I am planing to roughly follow this itinerary next year (in the Spring or Fall, time not fixed yet).
Rough itinerary : http://www.tinyurl.com/2ap6lw6
(Countries traveled: Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland)
Solo trip, self contained. Likely 2 months. Will take train or bus for some or part of the legs if necessary.
If you have any tip, recommendation, warning, etc. about the routes followed in between corner points where I will be visiting friends and family, that would be great. I am thinking roads to avoid because of lack of shoulder, very bad pavement, etc. (apart from the obvious, i.e. highways), too steep a grade, etc... or the scenic ones not to be missed, etc...
Thanks!
Cheers,
LB

Cycling Western europe
Hey, we have cycled through those countries as well. Cycling in France is our favourite, just take the smallest roads you can find on the map and you'll have one car pass you an hour Also the French scenery has lots of variety and people on the road are very friendly and encouraging, also in France they are used to cyclists and they will give you lots of room if they pass you (you might see the road signs telling drivers to give cyclists 1.5m space if they pass). For Switzerland, we loved cycling the passes. You work your way to the top from where you have an awesome view and you go all the way down again! Do know that it is hard to find 'wild camping' spots in Switzerland because it's fenced everywhere. Switzerland does have many well marked cycling routes, you can stop at any visitor centre for the maps of these routes. Belgium and Holland we had lots of rain, but the Ardennes are nice and historically interesting to cycle through. Holland is quite complicated as you're not allowed to cycle on the road, only on the cycling paths (all cars and trucks will endlessly hunk their horns at you if you're on the road). It was frustrating at times because we had to turn around often, many of the cycle paths had a dead end... even though I grew up in Holland, I did not really enjoy cyclotouring there and the flatness didn't add to much enjoyment for us.
We've got our routes and journals on our website, www.vimaxadventures.com
Hope that helps!
