From Urumqi to Almaty

Hey there
We both (Stef and Mel) are travelling since march 2011 with our bikes over Thailland, Laos, China and our next step will be Kazakhstan.....yaaaay! :o)
We would like to meet some locals or travellers who could give us tipps and tricks about the route from Urumqi to Almaty. Even though, it would be great to find on our way a warm shower or even a bed???
We are camping the most time, so maybe someone can offer his kazakh garden? hehe....
In Almaty we want to apply for 1 or 2 visas for our further travelling over Kyrgystan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan/Tukmenistan, Iran. We are really keen to cycle over the pamir highway. does some have any advises?
