Loss of a wonderful traveler: Mirthe van den Brink

Frank Berauer wrote us with the incredibly sad news that world cyclist and Warmshowers.org member Mirthe van den Brink was hit by a car and killed in Southern Thailand in late July. Many of you met Maarten and Mirthe as they traveled. There is more information on their blog (in Dutch - but here is a poor English translation.
We send our deepest condolences to Maarten and the rest of Mirthe's family.
From Frank Berauer:
Mirthe van den Brink
died 23. Jul. 2009, age 26Maarten and Mirthe were on the journey of their lives: After cycling eight months in New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and now Southern Thailand, the rest of the world was still to be explored.
She admired the scenery North of Krabi. The sun had just come out and promised wonderful cycling.
The truck came like lightning from a clear sky. It all happened in a flash.
Mirthe did not feel any pain. Her last thoughts were of the beautiful jungle and what a great day it would be.
We wish Maarten all the strength he needs for a new start!

The strength to pedal on...!
Maarten and Myrthe were cooking on our windy verandah, having arrived before we came home late from a weekend tramp in March 09 near Wellington, NZ. Within minutes we had a 'click' and thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We had heard the sad news shortly after the accident (bad news travels fast!) and feel it as an honour to have met them, and have assisted them with some earthly things as a decent washing machine and a warm shower. Keep cycling, keep hosting cyclists, and make the best of your life!

Our thoughts are with you in this very difficult time
We are shocked and saddened to hear the news about Mirthe.
Being on tour, in the back of your mind you always know that accidents are possible but you never really think it will happen.
We admire that you were following your dreams and seeing the world one pedal at a time.
Our hearts go out to you and your family.
Sad it happen to a sister.
There no a right place to die, but if I have to chose one, it will be on my bicycle. Let's keep our wheel turning for her and the others who die on the road? I never meet her, but I feel she could be my sister.
The bicycles don’t do any harm to others.
Life will never be fair.
I have a younger brother who
I have a younger brother who the people thinks that he is a negative person, other thinks that he is a loveless person, other thinks that he is a"tell it like it is " person, just because he thinks that "la vida es un asco",the translation is more or less like this"the life is shit".
sometimes when it happens something like the Mirthe situatuion,is when I thinks that my brother is right.
I rememeber the Billy Joels song"only the good ones die young"....
also I remember my life philosofy....that all of us we have marked in the calender when we are going to leave this place, but nobody knows when is that date,so is better to enjoy every second of your life to the maximun, whearever is your passion,....
I remember also a line in a John Lennon's song:....life is what it happens while you are making plans.
There is a lot of memories from good life stuff when somebody pass away...never when nobody die....for some reason.
Maybe that's the reaosn Mirthe is gone....because as a good teacher she is teaching us the good stuff from life.
Not,I dont believe is a sacrifice.....is just life.
I will never forget a poem I read it long but a long time ago...and the main line it said:
IN LIFE BROTHER
BRINGS FLOWER
NOT TO THE CEMENTERY.
She looks so adorable in this picture.
I bet I miss a unique oportunity in life to meet her.
Let;s go out, for a bike ride in her honor.
Don't forget to put atention to every flower in the road.
Because she is in one of them
My condolances
Wow, what a shock! Sorry to hear about such a loss. I was hit by a car last year and thankfully walked (limped) away from the scene although my commuter bike was totaled. As a result, I am more committed than ever to take part in cyclist visibility and awareness. I am begining my first tour ever at 47 years of age. It's short and sweet, 2 sections of the transamerica and 1 section of the western express from Kansas to Colorado.
I am excited about my trip but saddened by such news.
I hope you keep pedaling in her honor.
Robin
So sad ...
...but I guess she was probably a very happy person and filled with a lot of peace. How else, because, together with Maarten they were doing what they loved most.
Maarten, I wish for you to realise that nobody will ever be tested beyond their capabilities. This is not a nice test I know and for that reason I want you to know that my deepest sympathy is with you and also those close to you.
I recently cycled in Italy and was hit by a car albeit a very slow moving incident but nevertheless scary.
My prayers be with you,
Rds,
Naas
My Condolences
Just from seeing her photo and knowing what she has done, Mirthe seems like a beautiful and amazing human being. I am deeply saddened. She is my age. I wish I could have met her in our bicycle travels.
Horror
Every day we risk that same fate. I send all my love to you, Maarten and to all cyclists out there. Be careful. And keep going.
Peace,
É.
my condolences
I did not know Mirthe but to hear of this news makes me very sad. All the best to Maarten.
