Once again, thanks to all of your for your kind generosity to touring cyclists this year. And all of us who have stayed with you thank you as well.
Just a few quick notes:
First, a word of thanks to a few of the absolutely wonderful volunteers who spent countless hours making Warmshowers.org happen this year:
- Eduardo Green, of Florianópolis, Brazil, translated the website into Portuguese.
- Christopher Meyer, of Switzerland, created a new iPhone app for Warmshowers.org.
- Kevin O'Leary, of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the USA, has handled the registration duties with grace and diligence. He looks at the logs of registrations every day, roots out spammers, responds to your email messages, and keeps things humming.
- Chris Russo, of Durham, North Carolina, USA Salvador Fernandez of Geneva, Switzerland are working with me on a redesign of the website, a major undertaking. We hope to roll out a new features including a streamlined front page, improved search, and improved user registration, along with a new overall site design.
- I (Randy) was the webmaster and dealt with technical problems and helped with supporting our users. And we got a separate bank account for this initiative this year, with better bookkeeping.
- And to all of you who so generously hosted members, THANK YOU.
Second, it's time to remind you to please log in and check your registration information. I know that you know it's already right. I'm just asking you to do it anyway. We pride ourselves in keeping the site up-to-date so that travelers don't have the frustration of trying to contact hosts that aren't there any more. Just go to http://www.warmshowers.org/user and log in. You can use your email address if you forget your username (which is [user]). You can request a one-time login link at http://www.warmshowers.org/user/password if you don't remember your password.
In a couple of days I'll begin the annual task of deleting the accounts of people who haven't logged in for a year, so please log in soon. We grew from about 11,000 to about 15,000 members this year, but every year we delete about 10% of the membership who haven't logged in lately and don't respond to our requests to do so. (It looks like we'll delete about 2400 accounts on about January 6.)
The table below gives a snapshot of where our active members are located by continent as of December 3, 2010. The site also has a breakdown by country.
| Continent | Members | Percent |
| Africa | 67 | 0.4% |
| Asia | 650 | 4.3% |
| Europe | 4396 | 29.2% |
| North America | 8761 | 58.2% |
| Oceania | 804 | 5.3% |
| South America | 368 | 2.4% |
Finally, your financial support is always welcome. All of the registration and technical work and the work of keeping the site going is done by volunteers. Our hosting fees and related expenses run between $60 and $90/month, so that means we're spending about $720 to $1080/year for hosting alone, and there are related expenses for monitoring and such. We received US$1344 in donations this year. THANK YOU! If you would care to donate, please just click the "Donate" button or go to the donate page.
Again, thanks to all of you for your generosity to touring cyclists. If you have any questions at all, just reply to this email and we'll try to resolve them.
Thanks,
-Randy

Account deletion warning emails
Thank *you*, for running the website. Luckily my account wasn't deleted.
I'm curious: do you send inactive users a warning email with a special subject line a few months before you delete their accounts? It'd be a good idea, in case a member is away touring somewhere with no Internet access.
Re: Account deletion warning emails
Yes, we do send warning emails before deleting accounts that have been inactive over a year.
This year we sent warning messages (to members who hadn't logged into the website since Jan 1, 2010) the end of October, November, December, and then a final one right before Jan 13, 2011 -- the day these accounts were actually removed.
