Ljubljana touring gear, routes, advice!

Hi,

I am planning a bike trip from Slovenia to Ukraine, and was hoping someone might have some info on store/contact for used touring gear. Or even mentioning a couple good bike shops would help! I am in Ljubliana now, trying to get geared up.

Thanks so much

Amelia

Hi Amelia,

There's plenty of good bike shops in Ljubjana, so you will find everything you need.

I'm unaware whether you are contemplating the option to cycle first through Slovenia before heading off to Ukraine. However, from my experience of cycling all over the country in 2009 (https://picasaweb.google.com/gerard.castella/EsloveniaAmbBicicleta09#), I'd strongly recommend you don't miss the Triglav National Park area, located in the north-west of Slovenia. So beatiful landscapes and scenarios all around. At this time of the year you can even reach the peak of Mt. Triglav (2864m)! :)

Cheers,

Gerard

Hi Sally,

Actually we were not following any specific route. We basically wanted to cycle on the north west area of the country, but did so from east to west, and north to south. There you find excellent spots. A good thing is to cycle around the perimeter of Triglav National Park, so excellent spots all around. You ride along Soca River and if wanted, cycle as well the highest (cyclable) pass of the country, which is Vrsic pass (1611m). We rode in the very last stage of summer time, so the weather was quite great, yet often minus zero at night.

And if you like trekking, do not miss the 7 lakes route that crosses Triglav National Park, made it in two days. And also the peak of Triglav (2864m). When the weather is great, you can even observe the coast! We were not that lucky though! :)

Cheers,

Gerard
