I'm planning to cross the Alps from Italy (ideally near Lake Como) into Switzerland around end of March /mid April and was wondering if anyone who is familiar with that region could give me any tips on which pass it would be best to use. I think some of them are still closed in this period? Thanks,

I believe the Simplon pass is always open

Chiavenna – Maloja-Pass (1815m) then either Silvaplana – Savognin over the Julier-Pass (2284m) to Chur or ride to Austria via St Moritz – Zernez – Scuol.
Malojapass and Julierpass are usually not that busy compared to the heavy traffic on the Simplonpass.
I rode the other direction from Chur to Chiavenna on a sunny day in early April last year.
