After the massive reduction of subforums I have to write this here. I don't know how can I activate email notifications (is it actually possible?). In the past I used to get an email everytime someone sent a message and recently I missed a traveler for not accessing my profile daily.

Normally you cannot choose not to get notifications but what with all the changes the last year I am not sure if it can be the case. I seem not to have gotten email notifications since beginning of July now that I check it. Workaround is to install the app on your phone but you will need to have the app running to get notifications there also.
Thanks... I hope if any of the developers of WS sees this they'll reintroduce that option. It's doubtful someone would want to pay for WS in its current disfunctional state.

Same. Already missed 3 requests. When travelling, requests with no answer was already a problem to deal with, but without emails notification, I can't imagine the pain using warmshowers this summer.
I send lots of requests no responses and I miss also lots of guest . No notifications by email and even with the apps on my phone no notifications .
I CANNOT open the web site EVERYDAY to check !!
Please do something it is alreday difficult with covid and if you get no notifications it is impossible .....

I agree. I had to edit my profile and ask everybody to send SMS after sending a request. Notifications are missing. This kind of disfunctionality should be informed to all members, to payers and non paying members.
Since beginning of July we don't get notifications and missed several cyclists! For iOS I dont know any useful app, so we need to use the website on computer or tablet.
Hope there will be some solution VERY soon. Otherwise warmshowers is of very few use anymore!
I never check the WS site as it used to notify me via email and a ping if a request popped up or some feedback about crapping in a bucket was left after a stay.. I just happened to pop on the WS site to look at the email and sure enough there was a request for 7/25 that I just caught today..7/27 . The site is more or less undependable if cyclists send out requests but don't get replies even from persons willing to host them and not just use the system as guests. I don't put the app on my phone either and I'm not sure if that's a solution if the application has to be open for a notification to appear. I guess it might be best for prospective guests to text first, WS email as a backup just to say I'm requesting a site, if I show up dead a day or two later , the guy in Michigan with the poop buckets might be a suspect etc.. It actually protects both the guest and host that somebody someplace at WS has a record of requests. Killer hosts, Killer guests etc. It was working prior to July so I'm not sure what the heck happened, but my poop buckets are going un used for now.

I contacted help desk through the contact form and quickly got a reply that they are working on it. That is good but it is beyond my ability to understand why there is absolutely no information about this on the website.

The WS leadership doesn't like to mention any bad news about the organization. It wants to maintain a purely positive atmosphere. The newsletter only says things like "Things are great, and don’t forget to DONATE!" And if you ask on the Facebook group why this longstanding bug keeps reappearing, or how exactly the organization has used the hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations in recent years, your post will immediately be deleted and you will probably be banned from posting on the Facebook group ever again.

I just got a message from the helpdesk that the problem is solved and that an announcement will be made soon.
I understand that there sometimes will be technical hiccups but why announce it only after it is solved? This notification function is so important to the process that we also need to know when it has stopped working and not only when it is up and running again.
so is this fixed now? I still dont receive notifications by email.... anyone know how to turn it on?

So I did get an email notification today. Took only 10 months or so to fix? The app is discontinued so I hope this means that now at least we get notified.
The free open source Android app was blocked from accessing the Warmshowers API, however there are still paid, in-house apps for Iphone and Android.
I wouldn't be surprised email notifications are deliberately blocked. For those of you who just arrived:

Noticed this also. I tried downloading the new app but I cannot even run it without paying what is around 3€ per month. It is not a lot but in principle I do not understand why it is necessary. There was a free app that more or less did the necessary...
Now will I have to pay to continue hosting? That will be the end of WS for me.
You can use only the website it is still free , it is less conveniant for sure

so I cross finger for WS members weake up and bord come to theirs senses ( hospitality first and money last)

I also had a look at trustroots. Looks quite good. And you can register yourself to "circles" like "hikers", "hitchhikers" or "cyclists". If you like, you can only accept requests from (and be seen by) other "cyclists". Anyway currently I also follow the warmshowers alternative https://warmshowers.bike/ (also to be seen on facebook and obviously better maintained). But I also don't see my future as host and guest on warmshowers anymore as long as commercial aspects overwhelm a well functioning community - very sad!
have a look on trustroots . I create an account but I am not sure to quit WS with 180000 members all over the world ( even if there is a lot of ghost) for only 7500 cyclists in circles
in 2019 I tour in australia , taiwan , korea with very good experience of WS 's hosts : on trustroots very few in autralia ( no in tasmania where I was during 1.5 month) only one in korea and nobody in taiwan
So I will prefer Ws members take over the power as the actual boards does sometimes ago .

I get an email when someone messages me. I only log in on rare occasions, so glad it works. In my profile, I allow email that is non-essential, and I allow email that is not plaintext. Not sure if those settings matter, as they shouldn't, but thought I should mention it.
If you don't get any emails about new messages, and your settings are similar, then I have no clue what the issue might be.
Thanks Matt, I did go into my profile and 'unchecked' the box to opt out of non-essential emails. It's rare I have anyone interested in my place, my last request was in 2019. So I may still check the site ocassionally just in case.
